Connect Linear

A Linear connection lets Game Designer track a game's work in a Linear project of one team. It is your org's: an admin makes it on the Connections tab of the org's page on your GreenMind account, and the org's games can then use it. See Connections for how connecting works in general.

Ways to connect

Making your own app

  1. Open the Use your own app dialog for Linear on the Connections page, and keep it open.
  2. In Linear, make a new OAuth application: give it a name, and set its callback URL to the redirect URL the dialog shows. Copy it from the dialog, not from here.
  3. Save the application, then copy its client ID and client secret into the dialog and press Connect.
  4. Sign in to Linear and allow it.

Scopes

GreenMind asks for two scopes:

read write

read is always needed. write is for creating and changing issues and comments. Nothing asks for admin. Linear's applications take their scopes in the sign-in request, so there is nothing to tick in Linear's console. Issues and comments written through an OAuth connection are authored by the application rather than by a person.

After connecting

Once it is connected, you choose the one team your org's games track their work under. Three more settings are shared by every game that uses the workspace:

  • Issue budget: how many open issues GreenMind may hold in the workspace (250 to begin with, the free plan's limit).
  • Reserve: how much of that budget is kept free for issues people file in Linear directly (50 to begin with). It must be smaller than the budget.
  • Days done issues stay: how long a done or cancelled issue stays before it is archived out of the window (14 to begin with).

Then, on the game, Use a connection and give the Linear project its work goes to.

Webhooks

Linear can tell GreenMind when an issue or comment changes. Connect first, so the connection's row shows its Webhook address. Then, in your Linear workspace's API settings, create a webhook with that address. Copy the webhook's signing secret, and Reconnect, pasting it in Webhook signing secret (optional). GreenMind checks every delivery against that secret and refuses one that does not match.

If it goes wrong

  • Needs reconnecting. Linear stopped accepting the credentials, for example because the key was deleted or access to the application was removed. Reconnect.
  • The redirect is refused. The callback URL on the Linear application differs from the dialog's. Copy it again, exactly.
  • Linear says a rate limit was reached. A personal API key has a lower hourly allowance than an OAuth application; use your own app if you hit it.
